Questions for a Pregnant Lady

As I become more noticeably pregnant, I have noticed that I have been bombarded with a swarm of questions about me and my baby. Some of the more common questions I am asked:

How are you feeling? Are you still sick?

I am actually feeling pretty well right now. I haven't had morning (ahem, all day) sickness since March, although I am starting to get the back pains, leg cramps, etc., but I've started prenatal yoga classes to help with the pain.

How far along are you?

23 weeks, or for you lay people, 5 full months, in the beginning on my 6th month.

Wow! You're hardly showing! (okay, I know that's not a question)

Gee, thanks. I am actually very proud of my little belly. Even though I'm "hardly showing", I can't seem to fit into any regular clothes, so I'm stuck in the maternity clothes that are made for women who are 9 months pregnant, some of which fit me as well as a burlap sack, which is probably why you think I'm hardly showing. Give me time.

When are you due again?

September 28.

Where is the baby going to be born?

Palomar Hospital in Escondido.

Are you going to take time off of work after the baby is born?

Of course!

Are you going back to work after the baby is born?

Yes (after my scheduled maternity leave) and so is Darwin.

Have you felt the baby kick yet?

Yes, and it's a wonderful thing! I love feeling my baby kick-I could just sit all day long and feel it kick. We have a routine developed, so there are certain times of day when I know its awake and eagerly await to feel the kicks.

What do the kicks feel like?

Quite honestly, they feel like little bubbles popping in my belly. Not painful at all. It's very reassuring to feel it because then I know the baby is alright.

And, the most frequently asked question:

Do you know what you're having?

Why, yes, yes we do! We weren't sure about finding out at first, but we just decided to find out this week. We went to the doctor yesterday and she confirmed it with an ultrasound-it's a baby! Whew! We are so excited! A baby Bustarde! (Thank God it's not an elephant!) I'm so glad we decided to find out!

English Muffin Mickey!!

At first I was surprised at seeing my likeness in Mom and Dad's english muffin this morning.

Of course, Mom and Mulan were equally impressed.

Actually, I think Mulan just wanted to eat it. Look at her, trying to resist snatching it out of Dad's hand.

I got very excited when Mom and Dad started talking about a new blog about Mickey sightings around the world. Wow! I guess that means I get to travel around the world! As if Dad doesn't take enough pictures of me already!

Then, Dad tried to pass this off as a "natural" Mickey sighting. I guess he's going crazy with all of the watermelon he has had to cut up for Mom lately.

Me and the English Muffin will go down in history. Think I'll make the local 6 o'clock news?

I Felt the Baby for the First Time!

That's right, me! Dar! Well, okay, Missi called me over telling me that she was feeling twinges in her belly a few minutes ago. But she was uncertain. I then used my very cold hand to diligently stake out a portion of her belly waiting for some movement. A second later ... twinge! I felt movement and confidently declared that I felt the baby first.

A few moments before that though it is noteworthy to tell everyone that I too felt some movement in my belly. Missi and I, as a result of our training to obtain our juris doctors, were quickly able to come to the amateur medical conclusion that I am not with child and probably am just hungry for breakfast. (A professional medical opinion would probably be able to tell whether I was particularly jonesing for some pancakes with strawberry compote and cool whip)

Anyhoo over the past 10 or so minutes, Missi felt some more little twinges at varying intervals. Missi thinks that the baby is doing laps in the belly similar to how the hippos at the zoo float around in regular patterns. Swim! Swim like Michael Phelps or Natalie Coughlin!

Jet Lag Gemini Show!

To exhibit the eclectic nature of this blog here's a review of Jet Lag Gemini's show at Soma the other night. Em took me to it and we met up with Heidi and Megan. (Also, it is a not so shameless trawl for responsive comments from our loyal readers)

First, at 24 I was not the oldest person there. A couple of local bands led off, which I forget their names. The second one had a lead singer who mysteriously walked back stage during the middle of a song only to come out without his shirt on. We were glad he didn't go back stage a second time. Also, before last night, I think the last time I saw so much dudes' underwear was after walking through the men's section of Macy's. Pull up your pants and use your belts!

So to the music! Jet Lag Gemini played about 5 songs, I really liked them all. I guess out of the songs played I enjoyed "Fit to Be Tied" the most. Well, to be honest that's probably only because Em was singing the lyrics next to me which made it easier to understand what was being sung on the speakers which we were right next to (I'm getting old). We haven't hooked up an mp3 player to this blog so if you want to hear them you'll have to use the magical internet to find them yourself.

Afterwards the girls and I talked to the band. I got a picture with one of them- woo hoo! The girls and some more of the fam are gonna see them again tonight. I'm not going so that I can improve my chances to convince Missi to let us buy Mario Kart. The money we're saving on gas and the ticket is practically half the price of the game!

Anyhoo, maybe we can get the fam to provide a follow up review-post!

Five Years of Happy Marriage!

This past weekend we celebrated 5 years of marriage. We had the hardest time thinking of what we could do over the weekend while Missi is in her impregnated state and couldn't take any time off of work. We decided to be tourists for the weekend in LA!

First we went to Pinks to try the hot dogs of choice for celebrities. I got the Rosie O'Donnell Long Island dog (hot dog with chili, mustard, cheese, onions, and sauerkraut) and Missi had the Walk-of-Fame dog (hot dog with cole slaw and fresh diced tomatoes). We both ended up liking each other's dog better than our own. The cole slaw and tomatoes were surprisingly delicious and refreshing.

Next, we went to the Disney Concert Hall and took a free walking tour. While we were there I saw a caravan of police and film crews drive off from the Stanley Mosk Courthouse past the Concert Hall filming something.

We stayed at the Renaissance hotel which is connected to the Kodak theater. From there we walked up and down the walk-of-fame. Predictably, we managed to find probably every single Disney affiliated star there.

After a great dinner at Lawry's, where I found the Yorkshire pudding to taste like Babingka and the cream corn to taste surprisingly like another Filipino dish, we drove past Bobby Trendy's store (the designer on the old Anna Nicole Smith show).

Then, we spent all night partying it up with the rest of the Sunset strip clubbers. Actually, the hotel was insanely loud, so we (more Missi) couldn't sleep. It was like we were back living in downtown next to the half-way house, or on Grape Street in Little Italy underneath the flight path. Then at 5:30 a.m. the hotel fire alarm went off. Out of the fully booked hotel we figure that we only saw about a dozen other guests leave their rooms in response to the alarm.

Since we got such an early start to the day, we decided to go drive around Beverly Hills. On the drive Missi and I found a house we will be moving into soon, even though its just south of Sunset (Anybody get that sly reference to Paul Rudd's line in "Clueless"?).

Anyhoo, after visits to the La Brea Tar Pits and The Griffith Observatory we called it a weekend and had lunch at The Hat, before visiting the H's and Q's.

OP Update

We saw the doctor again yesterday for another checkup. We heard OP's heartbeat again-it was much faster and louder than the first time. OP kept moving around; the doctor says its an active baby. That causes a little bit of concern since I know I will be able to feel OP move soon, which means I will be feeling all of those movements. Yikes!

Anyway, we're going back at the end of the month for the ultrasound. For those of you who don't know or forgot we are NOT going to find out the sex of the baby. You will have to wait until the end of September (or maybe even October) like the rest of us to find out.

Meanwhile, I have basically grown out of regular pants, and I even wore my first maternity shirts to work this week (a lot of my regular shirts don't seem to be long enough these days)! Thanks to my parents and sisters, I have a whole slew of new tanks and capris to wear this summer. I'll post a picture of me and the belly soon (I'm at work right now, so I don't have access to our pics).

Missi's Party Pics - Kid Edition

John, Brooke and Taylor were a hit at Missi's birthday bash. Check out these pics. The first one is of John making out with my mom. He was pretty slick about it too. He started with a little hug, a peck on the cheek and then Bam! Right on the smacker!
